Instructions

• Toast the bread (or don’t!).
• Make a circle out of the spread on the toast.
• Use other foods to make your face on the toast. (We used fruit, veggies, chocolate-covered raisins, nuts, pretzels, and graham crackers for our faces!)

With the school year starting, we think it’s a great time to talk about confidence with your kid. As you create your self portraits out of food, take some time to ask them about confidence.
Ask them, what do they think it means to be confident? Let them know that being confident doesn’t mean you’re a “know it all” or that you act brave even when you’re scared.
Confidence is knowing how uniquely made you are and there is a purpose behind that.

Take some time to talk about the school year ahead.
• What is something you know you’ll excel at this year?
• What is something you think you’ll struggle with this year?
•What do you believe about yourself? (I am brave, smart, strong, good at math)

Remind them that no one is perfect, that mistakes and failures help us grow. This year you will learn and try new things. You might not get it right that first time, but that’s ok. We have to
believe in ourselves and try again. Come up with a key phrase for the year that will help fuel your kid when they’re feeling low. Phrases like “I got this!” “I can do this!” “Keep moving
forward”. You can even take a line out of Finding Nemo “Just keep swimming, just keep
swimming”. Practice saying it together, so that when they feel like they can’t do something, they’ll think of this phrase and it will encourage them to keep pushing themselves and remain positive.

This school year will be an incredible year for you and your kid!
